Colour-ringed Whimbrels

Icelandic Whimbrels Numenius phaeopus islandicus are regular spring and autumn migrants in Ireland and many occur at North Bull Island. In spring, the majority of birds occur in the last week of April and the first week of May with smaller numbers during autumn passage in August and September. However, ringed birds could turn up at any time.

Researchers who are currently trying to unravel the migratory habits of this species and would appreciate reports of any colour-ringed birds observed.

Send observations to: bullislandbirds@gmail.com

All reports or photographs will be forwarded to the ringers.

Colours used are: white, niger, green, yellow, orange, red and lime. On birds with geolocators, the lower ring on right tibia is replaced by a flag.

Please record: date, location, ring colours and their position on each leg.
