Hirundine population study on North Bull Island, Dublin Bay

Survey 2008 to 2015

Tom Cooney

Hirundine species were once either unknown or very rare and irregular as breeding species on North Bull Island but in recent decades Barn Swallows Hirundo rustica and House Martins Delichon urbicum have nested annually. The establishment and expansion of these breeding populations have taken place at a time when both species are thought to have decreased in many other areas.

The breeding populations have been surveyed annually since 2008 and breeding success rates have been monitored.
