Distribution of Sea Buckthorn Hippophae rhamnoides (L.): an invasive species in an Irish nature reserve and an assessment of its value to birdlife

Tom Cooney

This paper will report on the relationship between birds on North Bull Island and the non-native and invasive Sea Buckthorn Hippophae rhamnoides. This shrub was deliberately introduced onto the island several decades ago and has since spread away from the original plantings. It now threatens to encroach into grassland habitat used by ground nesting birds. A list of bird species proven to use this habitat for nesting a feeding will be presented.
