Cooney, T, 2018. Seasonal variation and ratios of Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago to Jack Snipe Lymnocryptes minimus at an Irish coastal wetland. Wader Study 125(1): 54-56. doi:10.18194/ws.00094.

Jack Snipe are a difficult species to monitor owing to their “crepuscular or nocturnal habits, cryptic behaviour and reluctance to fly when disturbed”. Therefore there are often no reliable population estimates of their wintering populations. The objective of this study in Ireland was to explore the feasibility of establishing the ratio of Common Snipe to Jack Snipe by systematically recording birds ‘flushed’ in winter at North Bull Island, a coastal wetland habitat on the east coast of Ireland.
